About Adobe AIR

Adobe AIR is a runtime platform launched by Adobe in February 2008. It was left unsupported in 2011, but after that, HARMAN kept the app's development alive. With Adobe AIR, you can develop and run mobile and desktop apps using web technologies. Basically, you can convert apps made with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, or ActionScript into programs and apps that you can run on Windows, Android, and other operating systems. And all of this without having to program in a different native language for each operating system.

The purpose of Adobe AIR

Adobe AIR was initially designed to create cross-platform desktop apps, reuse existing web code without rewriting it in native languages, and distribute apps that work outside the browser, with access to system features such as local files, notifications, custom windows, and hardware integration. This made it a very popular choice for games, productivity tools, and business apps that wanted to maintain a single codebase across multiple platforms.

Core technologies and capabilities

AIR apps can be built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or with ActionScript and Flash content, leveraging the Flash rendering engine for rich interfaces. Additionally, AIR provides access to system APIs that allow reading and writing files, managing windows, displaying notifications, working with a local database, and even integrating web content within the app.

Current runtime status

Adobe stopped developing Adobe AIR, after which the project was taken over by HARMAN, which now maintains the SDK and runtime under the name Adobe AIR SDK from HARMAN. The runtime you download enables you to run apps packaged as .air on Windows and macOS, and it remains necessary for many apps and older games, as well as for enterprise tools that were never migrated to more modern technologies.

Alternatives to Adobe AIR

In everyday practice, Adobe AIR is no longer a cutting-edge technology: many developers have migrated to alternatives such as Electron, Flutter, progressive web apps (PWA), or native frameworks, which offer better performance, updated support, and less dependence on obsolete plugins. However, it is still common to find Adobe AIR installed on PCs running legacy software, classic games, or corporate apps that depend on the runtime to function.
